Behind the geometry. Interview to body ornaments maker, Yuka Toyooka.
幾何学の舞台裏へ。装身具作家・豊岡由佳さんへのインタビュー。

作りたいという衝動
魔除けやお守り、地位の象徴から宗教的な祈りに至るまで様々な意味合いと社会的役割を持ってきたアクセサリーなどの装飾品。時は移り変わり、今では自己表現の一つとして、リング、ネックレス、ピアスなどカジュアルに楽しまれている。だが、カジュアル以上の印象を残す作品を作るブランドに出会した。愛媛県の最南端に位置する愛南町にアトリエを構えるユカさんのブランド『YAWN RINGS（ヤウンリングス）』だ。ブランドが作るものは装身具と呼ばれる。日本のみならず、海外での個展やグループ展からの声もかかり、アーティストへの作品提供などクリエイティブ表現との親和性も高く活躍の場を広げている。
まずはなぜ愛南町で装身具なのか？YAWNの始まりを伺った。
「生まれが愛南町で、そこからずっと愛南町です。高校卒業してから働きながらも何か作りたいという衝動があり、ファッションも好きだったので、最初は洋服を作っていました。」その作品は目に止まり、クラブイベントに参加していた時にセレクトショップのオーナーから声をかけられる。だが、コラボレーションの提案は意外にもアクセサリー。「アクセサリーを作ってうちで置いてみない？」この提案がユカさんの人生を大きく変えることになる。「最初はアボカドやリンゴの皮などの素材を使った作品を作っていました。ただ、『腐りました』というお客さんの声があり、腐らないものをと思い金属を始めたんです。」
思考の結晶化
今では個展ごとに１５０-２００点ほど作品を準備するというユカさんの制作の源泉は徹底したリサーチ。個展のテーマを決めたらとにかく色々な情報を蓄え、溜め込み、作品に落とし込むという。制作のプロセスでスケッチはしない。書くことで安心し忘れてしまうため、調べたこともメモはせず、忘れたらそれまでと割り切る。残ったことだけが自分にとって必要なアイデアだと考えているのだそうだ。幾何学模様をモチーフとしたYAWNの装身具から、秩序や調和を感じるのは、ユカさんが集めた情報から抽出され、削ぎ落とされた思考が結晶化しているからだろう。
自然と幾何学模様
では、リサーチの元となるインスピレーションはどこから来るのか？「自然や宇宙が好きで、あと物理や数学も好きなんです。」自然の有機的形態もユカさんの手にかかれば幾何学模様へと昇華される。その変換のプロセスは？「フラクタルなど自然の造形を人間が抽出して、最も端的に表しているのが幾何学だと思っています。古舘伊知郎さんの引用で『道路に真っ直ぐな線を引いても意図せず少しブレる。それが人間の作る自然。』というのもすごい感銘を受けました。人間の作ったものには想定外の誤差が生まれるんです。人間が作るものは自然の一部ではあるんだけど、自然とはやっぱり違う。すごくいい作品が作れたと思っても、道端で摘んだ一本の花には絶対に敵わないんです。」人間が作るものとして線引きし、自然からのインスピレーションを端的に変換する、そこに論理が支配する世界や未知の領域への興味が交差し、幾何学模様へと表出していく。YAWNはまるで思考の実験室のようだ。ある時には、お客さんに作品のモチーフは「カタカムナですか？」と問われたそう。意図していなかったものの、調べてみたらその類似性に驚き。その当時、量子についてリサーチしていたユカさんは、量子の動きを表しているようなカタカムナもあるなと繋がりを感じ、深い意味を見出したそうだ。まるで化学反応が起きたような出来事である。
『思考に影響を与える素材』と『思考を促す形』
作る装身具の素材の一つは真鍮。ここでも予期せぬ化学反応が生まれていた。「初めは本当にインスピレーションで選んだ素材だったのですが、調べていくと面白かったんです。真鍮は銅と亜鉛の合金なのですが、それは体の中の必須ミネラルでもあります。そして、それらが１：１０で存在していないと思考に影響を与えるんだそうです。だから、『思考に影響を与える素材』と『思考を促す形』で繋がったと思いました！」YAWNの作品は、円錐形や四角柱の指輪、丸と線のイヤーカフとまとうという過程に思考を挟ませると気付かされる。どうやって身にまとうのが正解なのか？この形はどういう意味を持つのか？違う作品を手に取るごとに新たな問いを促される。それが素材レベルでYAWNの表現に深みを加えているのだから、これほどまでに隙のない方程式はない。
好きなジュエリー作家
イギリスのジュエリー作家、ウェンディー・ラムショー(Wendy Ramshaw)を好きな作家にあげてくれた。「ジュエリーの歴史を調べる中で出会い、見つけた瞬間に、私絶対生まれ変わりだと思いました！その当時ご存命でしたが（笑）。でもそれくらい通じるものがあったんです。」ラムショーは、ジュエリーと彫刻の境界線をなくし、身体を飾るものとしてのジュエリーから単独で存在感を放つアート作品へと昇華させた作品群が高く評価を受けた作家。記号的なモチーフ、幾何学と見ればみるほどユカさんがラムショーに深い繋がりを感じたのも頷ける。だが、好きだけど傾倒はしないとユカさんはいう。「私は私の中の幾何学を追っていきます。」
YAWNで生きていく
ここには書ききれなかったものの、キレイの基準を決めたのは誰？指輪の形は丸じゃないとダメ？本当の自分がいると決めたのは誰？過去に干渉できないって本当？これらは全てユカさん自身が問いを投げ、別の視点を導き出した世の中の定型だ。ブラックホールのように興味の全てを吸収し、終わることのない問いとして幾何学模様に表出させるユカさんにとっての『YAWN』の定義を伺うと、迷いのない答えが返ってきたことも頷ける。それは「視点を変えるです。」
最後に、国内外問わず作品を発表し、クリエイティブからのコラボレーションも引くて数多のユカさんが一番叶えたい夢を聞いてみた。「死ぬまでもの作りを続けていくこと。振り返るとしんどかったこともありますが、でも最終的に楽しかったということに尽きます。YAWNで生きていくと腹を括ってから、これ以外のことはしたくないと思っています。」

Thirst for creation
From repelling evil spirits, amulets, a status symbol to prayers, ornaments like jewelry and accessory had been playing social roles and carrying various meanings over the course of history. As times have changed, we enjoy rings, necklaces and pierces casually as a medium for self-expression. Though one of the brands I came across gave me an impression more than just casual. That is Yuka’s brand “YAWN RINGS (pronounced Ya-un)” which is based in Ainan town, located at the furthest south of Ehime prefecture. Her brand produces ‘body ornaments’ (Sōshingu). Gaining traction both in Japan and internationally with invitations to solo and group exhibitions, the brand is expanding its horizons through strong synergy with creative expression, including providing Sōshingu to artists.
Why is she based in Ainan town and also why Sōshingu? Here is YAWN’s origin story.
“I was born in Ainan town and have been living there since. After graduating from high school, while working in a company, I really wanted to create something. Since I had a passion for fashion, I was making clothes at first.”
When she was attending a club event, a select shop owner who came across her clothes asked her to collaborate with him. However, his request to her was to make accessories. “What about making accessories and exhibiting at my shop?” His proposal changed her course of life.
“I was making products out of organic waste like avocado and apple peels at the beginning. But, one day, one of the customers told me that its rotten and I switched materials into metals that won’t go rotten.”
Crystalizing the thoughts
Yuka now prepares around 150 to 200 pieces for each solo exhibition, with thorough research serving as the ultimate source of her creative output. Once she decides a theme of an exhibition, she starts collecting various information, accumulating them and channeling them into her work. She neither make any sketches during the production nor taking notes when researching. Because writing things down brings her a sense of relief that leads to forget them. If an idea fades, so be it—she believes that whatever remains is all the inspiration she really needs. The reason why I feel order and harmony from her Sōshingu would be because they embody her refined vision—thoughts distilled and stripped to their essence from the research she gathers.
Nature and geometric patterns
Then, where does her inspiration come from to do the research? She goes “I like nature, space, physics and math.” Organic forms of nature are sublimated into geometric shape in Yuka’s hands. I wanted to know the process of the transformation.
“I think geometry is the simplest way to show the creation of nature that is distilled by human such as fractal. I was also moved by the quote from Ichiro Frutachi, a well-known news anchor, saying that —when a human tries to draw a straight line on a street it jitters a little without knowing it and that is the nature that human creates.—There are unexpected errors in human creations. They are supposedly part of nature but it is not quite in reality. Even I think I was able to create a great piece, it never beats a blooming flower from the street.”

Geometric patterns emerge once she draws the line that what she makes is done by human, translates her inspiration from nature into the simplest form and intertwines her interests in the world where logic rules as well as in uncharted territories. YAWN is as if a laboratory of thoughts. One time, one of her customers asked her whether her motif is Katakamuna, an alleged ancient Japanese document featuring circular geometric symbols and poems. Though it wasn’t her intention and she didn’t know about it back then, she was surprised by the similarity between the two. Since she was researching quantum at the moment, she also found a deeper meaning by discovering how some of Katakamuna characters look like a movement of quantum. This event feels like as if a chemical reaction had taken place.
“Materials that influence thought” and “Thought-provoking forms”
One of the materials that she uses is brass. There was also another unexpected chemical reaction happened.
“I chose the material out of inspiration at first but I found it more interesting as I research. Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc and they are also necessary minerals in our body that have to exist 1:10 ratio otherwise that will affect our thoughts. So I was very excited that material and the forms are connected in a way that they both influence on your thoughts! ”
The works of YAWN—rings in the shape of cones and rectangular prisms, and ear cuffs formed of circles and lines—lead one to realize that the process of wearing them invites thought. What is the right way to wear? What does this shape mean? Every time you pick up a different piece, you are prompted with another question. On top of that, since the material adds depth to YAWN’s creative expression, I found there is no better formula than that.
Favorite jewelry maker
Yuka mentioned a British jewelry maker Wendy Ramshaw as her favorite jewelry maker. “I was researching the history of jewelry and I thought I must be her reincarnation! Although she was still alive back then.[Laughs] But that’s how much I was excited to find out about her.” Ramshaw received recognition for her jewelries that are not only an ornament for body but artwork that have a strong presence on its own by blurring the boundary between jewelry and sculpture. It seems only natural that Yuka gravitated towards Ramshaw as you see her similarity like graphic motifs and geometry. Though she likes the artist, she won’t just follow her path. “I will make my own path by searching for my geometry.”

YAWN as her path
There are many standards that she questions and found her won different perspectives—Who decide the standard for beauty? Is it not OK if a ring isn’t a circle? Who decided that there is a true oneself somewhere? Is it really true that we don’t have an access to our past? When asked for her definition of 'YAWN'—which, like a black hole, absorbs all of her interests and manifests them as an endless inquiry through geometric patterns—it was no surprise that Yuka responded without a moment's hesitation.
“It is to shift one’s perspective.”
Lastly, I asked the creator who constantly showcasing her work in Japan and beyond, and having many creative collaborations with artists what her ultimate dream be.
“To create until I die. Though there were hardships in the past, I can say that I enjoyed them all in the end. Since I decided to make a living through YAWN RINGS, I’m not thinking about doing anything else.”
