画家たちを”光の創造者”とフランスの哲学者ガストン・バシュラールが形容していた。”内面の光を..(省略)..太陽の光の世界にうつしかえる”のだと。

Sewing the Sailは、降り注ぐ光の中、人々がパティオで帆を補修する様子を描いている。屋根には蔦でも張っているのか、上から落ちてくる光はまばらに影を連れてクリーム色の帆に反射している。濃い緑の葉を持つ花壇の花、陽と影のコントラストが、太陽に愛された地域を思わせ、奥に海の見える開け放った扉まで、軽やかな風が抜けていく様も思い浮かぶ。

なぜSorollaがこの景色を描いたのか、想像に難くない。画家がその光景に生み出した光は、宝石のように輝きを放っているからだ。そこに人がいなかったら、雲が出ていたら、屋根が覆っていたら、私たちがこの景色を見ることはなかっただろう。

日々の光に常に目を向け、その瞬間に立ち止まることができた画家が、場所の記憶を鮮明に伝える一枚だ。

A French philosopher, Gaston Bachelard, called painters ‘creators of light’, who transform the light within into the world of sunlight.

Sewing the Sail captures people mending a sail under sunlight. The place seems not to have had a proper roof; rather, it looks as if it was covered by ivy or something similar, which allowed sunlight to filter through and reflect onto the cream-colored sail. The healthy green leaves in the flower bed, together with the contrast between light and shadow, illustrate the place beloved by the sun. It also evokes an image of dry, light winds passing from the front of the painting toward the door that opens to the sea.

No wonder the painter wanted to capture this scenery. The light he painted onto the canvas sparkles like a jewel. Without the people, without the clear sky, without the open roof, the scene would not exist.

Sorolla, who attentively sought beauty in everyday light and had the gift of stopping time in a moment, left this painting for those after him to remember the place vividly.
