08. The Ghost Writer’s Wife, The Shortest History of Japan and National Election

I’ve been into NHK’s, a Japanese national TV, short drama in the morning called ‘The Ghost Writer’s Wife‘, which is a story of a Greek, Irish writer Koizumi Yakumo (Lafcadio Hearn’s Japanese name) and his wife Setsu. Their interactions, known as Heaven and Toki in the series, are so wholesome and cute and warm my heart. At the same time, although I wasn’t familiar with his work before (apologies..), the fact that a foreigner took a such deeper interest in Japan and resided in Japan, learned the language and shared the culture abroad through his writing simply made me happy. It made me, and I believe many people, proud of the culture I was born into.

The fact that Japonisme—through which Japanese culture influenced Western art movements, even involving beloved and iconic artists like Van Gogh and Monet—continues to be revisited as a theme in exhibitions feels encouraging. It reminds us that Japanese culture has long been recognized abroad and viewed with admiration from outside Japan.

Speaking of Japan from outside, I just finished reading ‘The Shortest History of Japan‘. It is written by a British writer Lesley Downer, and I liked that she employed a storytelling unlike a history book that made me easy to go through the pages. First of all, I have an impression that we just go through book from page to page that writes about what happened when, who ruled a country when etc and remember for exams in the history class during junior high and high school. But, in this book, she shows a knack of storytelling. For instance, when she writes about the war by Toyotomi to invade Jyosen and conquer China in 1592, she goes ‘Tokugawa Ieyasu, foreseeing disaster, chose not to participate’, and another example is ‘The eighth shogun, Yoshimasa, who took power in 1444, was not the man.‘ which made me hooked. Secondly, though it might be also about storytelling, she describes things that we typically don’t see in the history book in school classes such as the reason why only male can be an emperor from at some point of the Japanese History or there was time in which the high-class men favored young male actors.

Another point is that a world in which provocative remarks and attitudes gain support, laws are disregarded, and wars are ongoing is not something humanity is experiencing for the first time. People always aim at making the country bigger, richer and more powerful than any other countries. Japan was also taking a forcible action towards neighboring countries to expand its territory. After all, time simply moves on as a pendulum swings—we drift to the right, then back to the left, endlessly oscillating. We sometimes ponder why isn’t there a single “right” answer for the path we should take toward a better world. If only it were that easy. Time simply moves forward, bearing countless motives as it shifts.

On the 8th of February, 2026, the House of Representatives election was held. I vote through a process of elimination, excluding parties whose policies I cannot support and choosing from what remains. In retrospect, how would Downer write about the election? - Would it be “The ruling party was blinded by the popularity of Takaichi, so much so that they are going to be blindsided by a quiet tectonic shift in the near future” or “The ruling party appears poised to ride another wave of support, strengthening its foundation for the next three years.”?

I hope we have the ability to take perspectives from outside into account, not only those from within. People from abroad often help spread awareness of Japanese culture, bringing positive impact to Japan, culturally and economically. Shōgun, the critically acclaimed drama series that won both an Emmy and a Golden Globe, was based on a novel written by a foreign author and funded by an overseas production. The show likely sparked new interest in Japanese culture—prompting fresh discussions, a renewed attention to Japanese cinema, travel to Japan, try some Japanese food, purchase some Katana swords etc. When I went to Sakai, Osaka, which, I learned about the district thanks to one of the live action Ruroni Kenshin’s films (Samurai X), I found that there were English instructions and English-speaking staff in several shops, and it made me reflect on how significant a role tourists must play in sustaining the industry.

Isn’t it purely a joy when others take an interest in one’s own culture? Seeing what I once took for granted through new perspectives is stimulating, and it makes me want to learn things I myself don’t know and things that I thought I knew. I know it’s not easy to stand up to a huge movement, but in my own way, I hope to play a small part in a society where sharing, exchange, and mutual respect can take root.

最近NHKの朝ドラ「ばけばけ」にハマっている。日本の怪談話を集めた本などを出版した外国人小説家・小泉八雲（ラフカディオ・ハーン）とその奥さん、セツさんのお話。朝ドラ内ではヘヴンさんとおトキさんという名前に変えられているが、そのふたりのキャラクターとやりとりがとてもかわいらしく描かれていて毎日ほっこり。それと同時に、ラフカディオ・ハーンさんこのドラマを見るまで何をした人かぶっちゃけ知りませんでしたが（スミマセン、、）、外国の人が日本の文化に興味を持って、日本に住んでみて、日本語を学んで、文化を海外に広めたというところが純粋にうれしい。その文化に生まれたことに対する誇りも感じさせてくれる気もする。みんな大好きゴッホやモネのような有名画家も巻き込んだ、日本の文化が欧米のアートムーブメントに影響を与えたジャポニズムが繰り返し展覧会にテーマになったりするのも、日本の文化は昔から海外で認められてて、外国からの憧れの眼差しがあったんだよ、と鼓舞してくれる。

海外から見た日本で言うと、最近「The Shortest History of Japan」という本を読んだ。これはイギリス人作家のレズリー・ダウナーが書いた日本の歴史本で、いい意味で歴史書っぽくないストーリーテリングがフックになって、本をダラダラ読みがちな私もわりと数日で読めちゃうくらいおもしろかった。一つにはその語り口にある。中高で学ぶ歴史の授業だと、何年に何が起こって、何年に誰が首相で、という出来事が淡々と並べられそれを片っ端から覚えていくだけの印象だけれど、例えばこの本の中では「最悪の結末を予期していた徳川家康は出兵からは足を引いた(p.107」「1444年に将軍の地位に着いた義政は待ち望んだ人物ではなかった(p.90)」のようなストーリーテリングを用いている部分に引き込まれた。二つ目に、ストーリーテリングにつながる部分でもあるが、授業では習わない歴史の別軸にも触れられている点が面白い。例えば、女性天皇は過去に存在したものの、ある時から男性のみ継がれるようになった訳(p.43)や、権力者が歌舞伎の女方を演じる若い男の子を好いていたことなど(p.123)。

三つ目に、過激な発言や態度が支持を集め、法が無視され、戦争もあるこの時代も、未曾有の出来事ではないということ。国を大きく、裕福に、どこよりも力強いものにしたいという思いはいつの時代もある。日本にもより強硬な手段を取って、その目標を達成させようとしていた時代もあって、秤の針が右に大きく触れたら左に、そしてゆっくりと左右に揺らいでいる間に時間が進んでいるだけなのだと思わせられる。ここまで刻まれた歴史があるのだから、どのような問いにも解法があり、進むべき道が示されててもいいようなものだが、そうもいかない。ただ、様々な思惑を乗せながら時代は移り変わっていくだけなのだ。

2026年2月8日は衆議院選挙の投票日だった。私は、この政党が絶対、この議員さんにかけたい、という方法で投票はできず、共感できない公約を掲げる政党を除いて、残った政党に票を投じている。振り返った時に、ダウナーならばどのようなクリフハンガーを用いるだろうかー「首相のポピュラリティに目が眩んでいた与党は、その足元から迫り来る地殻変動に気づくよしもなかった」もしくは、「向こう3年の足場固めに挑んだ与党は、大きな追い風を受けることになる」だろうか。

内から内を見るだけでなく、外からみられる内の視点も忘れないようにしたい。行ってみたい国、文化をもっと知りたい国、という興味から、外から来た人たちが日本の文化を自国に持ち帰って広めてくれたりもする。その文化的・経済的貢献度は計り知れない。エミー賞、ゴールデングローブ賞などでも大きく評価を得たShogunも、外国の作家が書いた小説を外国資本で製作されたものだが、作品を見てより日本文化に興味を持ち、意見を共有したり、過去の日本映画を鑑賞したり、日本へ旅行したり、刀を買ってみたり。刀鍛冶の町、大阪・堺に調理刀を買いに行った時（るろうに剣心の映画みて行きたくなりました）、どの店でも英語の説明書なり、英語が喋れる店員さんを雇っていて、観光客がどれほどこの産業に貢献しているのだろうと思ったりもした。

自国の文化に興味を持ってもらえることは純粋に嬉しいものではないか。あたり前だと思っていたことに、新たな視点が加わるのも刺激になる。そして私も知らなかったことを知りたいと思う。大きすぎるうねりに容易に立ち向かえるとは思わないが、私なりに共有し、交換し、尊敬し合う関係が形成できる社会の一部を担いたいなと思う。
